Berberine has been shown to be effective at lowering blood glucose in multiple human studies. The study that we will link compared berberine and metformin, and also the combination of both together in type 2 diabetics. The blood glucose lowering effects of berberine in this study were found to be comparable to metformin.

The dosage used in this study was either 500mg of berberine or metformin 3 times daily before major meals. The berberine dosage was reduced to 300mg doses if gastrointestinal side-effects occurred which only occurred in the combination group where the dosage was 500mg of berberine and 500mg of metformin 3 times a day, and all symptoms disappeared for all test subject 1 week after dosage reduction. Each study took place over a 13 week period.
